Haryana Speaker Harvinder Kalyan attends All-India Speakers Conference in New Delhi

New Delhi [India], September 7 (HBTV): Haryana Assembly Speaker Harvinder Kalyan participated in the centenary year celebrations of the All India Speakers Conference in the national capital, dedicated to Vithalbhai Patel, the first elected Indian Speaker.

Vithalbhai Patel was elected Speaker of the Indian Legislative Council in 1925. He introduced several reformative measures in the parliamentary system, which continue to serve as a guide for Indian legislatures today.

Presiding officers and MPs from legislatures across the country attended the two-day conference held in New Delhi on Sunday. Ahead of the event, Kalyan met Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar at his residence, where they discussed important issues and a collaborative approach in state and national interest.

The conference began on Sunday at the Delhi Legislative Assembly with Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurating the event. The valedictory session will be presided over by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. A commemorative postage stamp was also released by the Union Home Minister to mark the centenary of the All India Speakers Conference.

Shah said the conference provided an opportunity for leaders to enhance the dignity and respect of the Speaker’s role. ‘We should strive to offer an unbiased platform to raise the issues of the people. An unbiased argument must be done by the government and the opposition. We must ensure that the functioning of the House is carried out as per the rules of the respective House. In our 13,000-year-long history, whenever the assemblies have lost their dignity, we have had to face dire consequences,’ he said.

He also commemorated the centenary of Vithalbhai Patel's appointment as Speaker of the Central Assembly.
