Yoga and Sudarshan Kriya in Chhattisgarh prisons: New initiative to give direction to Naxal-affected inmates
Raipur (Chhattisgarh) [India], September 17 (HBTV): Chhattisgarh, long associated with Naxalism and violence, is now witnessing efforts to transform its image. Under Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, prison reforms have been prioritised, with yoga and Sudarshan Kriya introduced for inmates across all state prisons.
The government has emphasised that prisons should not only serve as centres of punishment but also as institutions of reform and rehabilitation. Every day from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., inmates in district jails take part in yoga and meditation sessions, which officials say have brought positive changes in both the administration and the inmates.
The state government has partnered with the Art of Living Foundation for the programme. Trainers from the foundation are conducting yoga, meditation, and Sudarshan Kriya sessions under the Prison Course, helping inmates attain mental peace and inner strength.
In prisons located in Naxal-affected districts such as Bastar, Dantewada, Bijapur, and Sukma, the initiative has shown significant results. Inmates who once followed the path of violence are now embracing the discipline of yoga. Officials noted that the effort not only promotes transformation within prison walls but also sends a message to society that moving away from violence toward peace and self-empowerment is possible.
Experts highlight that yoga and meditation help reduce stress, improve sleep quality, and boost self-confidence. Prison officials said incidents of fights and indiscipline among inmates have also declined since the programme’s introduction.
Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai said, ‘We want inmates, after coming out of jail, not to become a burden on society but to contribute to nation-building. Yoga and Sudarshan Kriya will give them a new life.’ Many inmates have admitted that these practices have helped them overcome anger and negativity, giving them the strength to look at the future with optimism.
