Washington DC [US], January 21 (HBTV): Filmmaker James Cameron has once again addressed the long-running debate over the ending of Titanic, saying he is weary of questions about whether Leonardo DiCaprio’s character, Jack Dawson, could have survived by sharing the floating raft with Rose, played by Kate Winslet.

Cameron, who won three Academy Awards in 1997 for writing, directing and producing Titanic, spoke on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, where the topic resurfaced during a discussion of his career. ‘Don’t ask me about the raft, people,’ Cameron said, expressing frustration with the persistent fan speculation.

Despite his exasperation, Cameron reiterated that the question has already been examined scientifically. He said experiments were conducted to assess whether Jack could have survived the freezing Atlantic waters or whether both characters could have lived. ‘We even went to the lengths of doing an experiment to see if Jack could have in any way survived, or if they could have both survived, and people didn’t even hear the answer when I told them,’ he said.

According to Cameron, survival would have required specific scientific knowledge about hypothermia that did not exist at the time of the Titanic disaster in 1912. He said that while it might be theoretically possible under modern scientific understanding and with considerable luck, such conditions were not plausible within the film’s historical context. ‘Therefore, the answer is no, he could not have. There’s no way. The conditions were not met,’ Cameron added.

The remarks underscored Cameron’s emphasis on scientific realism and narrative precision, traits that have contributed to both the critical and commercial success of his films.

Cameron recently made history as the first director to deliver four films that crossed the USD 1 billion mark at the global box office. Along with Titanic, his Avatar franchise has achieved massive commercial success, with Avatar (2009) and Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) each surpassing USD 2 billion worldwide.
