Madurai (Tamil Nadu) [India], January 22 (HBTV): A second-year college student in Madurai died after allegedly consuming borax (venkaaram) in an attempt to reduce her body weight, police said.

The deceased, identified as 19-year-old Kalaiyarasai, was a resident of Meenambalpuram. She had reportedly begun consuming borax believing it would aid in weight loss.

According to police sources, the incident occurred in the early hours of January 17, when she allegedly consumed borax after watching a YouTube video that claimed the substance could be used for weight reduction. Soon after ingesting it, she began experiencing nausea, dizziness and vomiting.

She was initially taken to a private hospital for treatment. However, later that night, around 11 p.m., her condition worsened and she reportedly suffered severe vomiting and dysentery.

As per the police statement, ‘she was immediately rushed to the Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai for further treatment, but doctors declared her brought dead on arrival.’

Based on a complaint lodged by her father, the Sellur police have registered a case and launched an investigation. Police officials said the exact cause of death will be confirmed after the post-mortem report is received.
