Gautam Buddha Nagar (Uttar Pradesh) [India], December 30 (HBTV): Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, along with Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, on Friday conducted an on-site inspection of the Jewar Airport and held a review meeting on the progress of the project.
The Jewar Airport, officially known as Noida International Airport, is a major greenfield airport project being developed near Jewar in Uttar Pradesh to serve the Delhi National Capital Region (NCR). The project is being executed under a public-private partnership model, with Zurich Airport International AG selected as the concessionaire.
Construction of the airport began in June 2022, with the first phase scheduled to become operational by December 2025. The idea for a second international airport in the NCR was first discussed around the time of the 2010 Commonwealth Games, but the project faced delays for over a decade due to challenges related to the expansion of Delhi’s existing airport.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of the project in November 2021. Yamuna International Airport Private Limited (YIAPL), a subsidiary of Zurich Airport International AG, is overseeing the development, while Tata Projects is responsible for engineering, procurement, and construction.
Located approximately 75 kilometres from Delhi, the airport will be the NCR’s second international airport after Indira Gandhi International Airport and is expected to significantly boost connectivity in western Uttar Pradesh. It is also envisioned as a strategic hub for cargo operations, aimed at strengthening logistics and supporting economic growth.
The airport will be connected through six roads, rapid rail-cum-metro services, and pod taxis. It will also feature a CAT-III B Instrument Landing System, enabling flight operations during low-visibility conditions.
Jewar Airport is expected to spur real estate development in the region and generate nearly one lakh direct and indirect jobs. The project is aimed at easing congestion at Delhi’s IGI Airport while providing a modern and efficient aviation hub.
The master plan of the airport includes four phases, with the initial phase featuring two runways and provisions for future expansion to a six-runway airport. The project also emphasises environmental sustainability, with plans to achieve net-zero emissions and minimise environmental impact through advanced technology and modern terminal design. (ANI)
