Sukma (Chhattisgarh) [India], February 14 (HBTV): Villagers in Naxal-hit Jagargunda in Chhattisgarh have gained direct access to government schemes after banking services were re-established in the area.

Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai said around 600 people have already opened accounts since the bank began operations. He said Jagargunda was once known for its tamarind market but the bank there was destroyed by Naxalites, forcing residents to travel 60–70 km to Bijapur, Sukma, or Dantewada for banking services. With the reopening, residents can now access facilities locally.

Bank Assistant Manager Shankar Mundari said the government supported the initiative and more than 600 accounts have been opened. He added that there is no other bank within a 50-kilometre radius and camps are being organised in interior villages. Free Jan Dhan accounts are also being opened, including for students.

Jagargunda Sarpanch Nitya Kosma said the village had once experienced the highest Naxalite influence in the district. He recalled that in 2002 Maoists looted and destroyed the earlier bank and residents lived without basic facilities such as education, healthcare, and ration shops.

Local resident Roshni Kashyap said villagers earlier had to walk long distances for services but the bank has improved access to benefits and government support.

A branch of Indian Overseas Bank has now been established in Jagargunda, which remained under Naxal control for decades. Authorities said the reopening marks a significant shift toward economic activity and direct transfer of welfare benefits.

Bastar Range IG Sundarraj P said anti-Naxal operations and development works remain priorities, and banking facilities are being expanded in interior areas. He added that improved access to banking will help revive the tamarind market and promote trade, education, healthcare, and employment opportunities.
