Siaha (Mizoram) [India], January 21 (HBTV): Assam Rifles on Tuesday apprehended an individual in Siaha district for allegedly transporting foreign currency and smuggling tobacco products and foreign cigarettes, an official release said.

During the operation, personnel recovered foreign currency amounting to Burmese Kyat 1,75,00,000, along with two cases of smuggled tobacco valued at INR 50,000 and one case of foreign cigarettes worth INR 1,30,000.

According to the release, the operation was launched based on specific intelligence inputs from Assam Rifles’ own sources. A Mobile Vehicle Check Post was set up in the general area of Tuipang in Siaha district to intercept the consignment. At around 3:35 am, a tipper vehicle was stopped, and a search led to the recovery of the contraband.

One individual, identified as U Phyu Maung, aged 37, was apprehended in connection with the illegal transportation. He is a resident of Rakhine State in Myanmar, the release said.

The seized contraband and the apprehended individual were handed over to Tuipang Police Station in Siaha district for further legal proceedings.

In a separate incident earlier this week, Assam Rifles had seized illegal foreign currency and apprehended another individual in Siaha district. Based on intelligence inputs, a Mobile Vehicle Check Post was established on January 16 in the Lungbun area, where personnel intercepted a suspicious vehicle and recovered Burmese Kyat amounting to 1,40,82,000. One person involved in the illegal transportation was also apprehended in that operation.
