New Delhi [India], March 9 (HBTV): Another incident of an attack on persons from Northeast India has been reported in the national capital. Reports indicate that at least one woman was assaulted on Sunday near the Saket District Court Complex in New Delhi, though conflicting accounts suggest that two women may have been attacked.
While ANI reported that a woman from Manipur was assaulted by a group of men, a post by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma stated that both a Manipuri woman and an Assamese woman were attacked.
According to ANI, a young woman from Manipur was allegedly attacked on Sunday evening near the Saket District Court Complex. She was taking a walk in a park with friends when a group of men allegedly made inappropriate remarks towards them.
When one of the women objected to the comments, the situation escalated and she was reportedly assaulted by the group.
The injured woman was taken to Safdarjung Hospital for medical examination and treatment. Preliminary reports indicate that she suffered minor injuries and is expected to recover.
Police said they have reached out to the victim and that an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
Meanwhile, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Monday expressed anger over the incident, describing it as an act of racial bullying and urging authorities to take strict action.
In a post on X, Sangma wrote, 'Angered by the repeated attacks on North East people in mainland India. The physical attack on two of our people from Manipur and Assam near Saket Court, Delhi, is sickening. Racial bullying should not be accepted as the new normal, and we must act against it. Urge the authorities to take stringent action.'
Earlier on February 25, a couple accused of racial abuse and criminal intimidation against three women from Arunachal Pradesh in New Delhi's Malviya Nagar was sent to 14-day judicial custody.
Delhi Police said the accused woman and her husband were arrested in connection with the case.
The incident occurred on February 20, when three women residing as tenants in an apartment complex in Malviya Nagar alleged mental harassment and humiliation. Police said the dispute began as a minor grievance but escalated into a confrontation.
According to police, the investigation is being conducted by an officer of the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police and is being closely supervised by senior officials.
Delhi Police also said that relevant provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act have been invoked based on the material available during the investigation.
Police earlier registered an FIR at Malviya Nagar Police Station under BNS Section 79 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman), Section 351(2) (punishment for criminal intimidation), Section 196 (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, etc), and Section 3(5) (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention).
