Chumoukedima (Nagaland) [India], February 6 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said the government's newly signed tripartite agreement for the eastern districts Nagaland would open new avenues of opportunity and prosperity for the region.

Describing the agreement as historic, Modi said it would pave the way for accelerated development and create fresh opportunities for people living in the eastern districts of the state.

The agreement was signed on February 5 between the Centre, the Nagaland government, and the Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organisation (ENPO), which represents eight recognised Naga tribes across six districts in eastern Nagaland.

In a post on X, Modi said, ‘This is a historic agreement indeed, which will enhance the development trajectory of eastern Nagaland in particular. I am sure it will open new avenues of opportunity and prosperity for the people. It reflects our unwavering commitment to peace, progress and inclusive growth in the Northeast.’

Under the agreement, a Frontier Nagaland Territorial Authority (FNTA) will be created for six districts — Tuensang, Mon, Kiphire, Longleng, Noklak and Shamator. The pact also provides for the devolution of powers over 46 subjects to the FNTA.

It further envisages the establishment of a mini-secretariat for the FNTA, headed by the additional chief secretary and the principal secretary, along with a mechanism for sharing the development outlay for eastern Nagaland in proportion to population and area.

The agreement, however, explicitly states that it does not affect the provisions of Article 371(A) of the Constitution of India in any manner.
