New York (US), October 15 (HBTV): India has been elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the 2026-28 term, marking the country’s seventh time on the Council, India's Permanent Representative to the UN, Parvathaneni Harish, announced on Wednesday.

In a post on X, he thanked all delegations for their support and highlighted that the election reflects India’s commitment to human rights and fundamental freedoms. ‘We look forward to serve this objective during our tenure,’ he added.

The UN Human Rights Council, established in 2006, is the main intergovernmental body within the UN responsible for promoting and protecting human rights worldwide. Comprising 47 member states, it provides a multilateral forum to address human rights violations, respond to emergencies, and make recommendations for better implementation of human rights on the ground.

India’s Permanent Mission to the UN emphasized that the election reflects the country’s steadfast commitment to multilateralism and dialogue as tools to achieve shared global goals. As a founding UN member, India has consistently supported the UN Charter and contributed to its specialized programs and agencies.

The statement further underscored India’s efforts to collaborate with all member states to achieve equitable solutions to global challenges, including peacebuilding, sustainable development, poverty eradication, climate change, terrorism, disarmament, health, pandemics, migration, cybersecurity, outer space, frontier technologies, and reformed multilateralism.
