Chümoukedima, August 5 (HBTV): Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare and Minister of Chemicals & Fertilizers, Government of India, Jagat Prakash Nadda, along with Assam Minister of Health & Family Welfare Ashok Singhal and Rajya Sabha MP Phangnon Konyak, visited landslide-affected areas in Mon town on August 5, 2026.
Nadda inspected the landslide-affected locations at Defence Colony and adjoining affected areas in Techa Ward.
The Union Minister also interacted with landslide-affected families at the Konyak Union Office in Mon. Expressing his solidarity with the victims, he described the incident as "very disheartening and painful". He encouraged the affected families and the people of Mon district, saying they were not alone during this difficult time and that both the government and the people of the country stood with them.
He said he had witnessed the extent of the damage and understood the hardships faced by the people following the disaster. Assuring full support from the Centre, Nadda said the Government of India would leave no stone unturned in extending assistance and restoring normalcy. He added that a central team would visit the district to support the ongoing relief efforts.
Nadda also conveyed the Prime Minister's message to the victims' families. He acknowledged the relief initiatives undertaken by the district administration led by the Deputy Commissioner, the Konyak Union, Konyak Students' Union and Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khong in operating emergency relief camps.
He also appreciated the rescue efforts carried out by teams led by the Deputy Commissioner, Superintendent of Police, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), civil society organisations and volunteers.
Deputy Commissioner of Mon, Wennyei Konyak, in his welcome address, briefed the gathering on the disaster situation in the district. He said incessant heavy rainfall had triggered floods and landslides in several locations, causing extensive damage to roads, bridges and other public infrastructure.
He informed that many villages experienced temporary disruption of road connectivity, while Defence Colony and adjoining areas were among the worst affected by multiple landslides. Residential houses sustained damage, several families were displaced, and power and water supply were temporarily disrupted in certain locations.
The Deputy Commissioner said relief camps and temporary shelters had been established where required, while food grains, drinking water, medicines and other essential commodities were being distributed to affected residents.
Konyak Union president Yamao Konyak expressed gratitude to the Union Minister and his delegation for visiting the district. He said the visit sent a strong message that the people of Mon were not alone during this difficult period.
Assistant Manager (Response & Communication), NSDMA, and Nodal Officer (Disaster Management), DDMA Mon, Rendemo Shitio, delivered a PowerPoint presentation on the monsoon damage assessment for July 2026, covering the post-disaster interim assessment of Mon district and Nagaland.
He said incessant monsoon rainfall on July 19 and 20, 2026, triggered catastrophic landslides and flash floods across Mon district, resulting in loss of life, widespread destruction of homes, severe agricultural losses and complete blockage of critical road connectivity.
According to the presentation, the district recorded 83.95 mm of rainfall on July 19, while cumulative rainfall between July 19 and July 31, 2026, reached 341 mm, as recorded by the Automatic Weather Station (AWS) at Mon headquarters.
