Bara [Nepal], November 22 (HBTV): Gen-Z protestors in Bara district have agreed to pause their demonstrations for three days after a verbal agreement with local authorities to address their demands.
The understanding was reached two days after the group alleged that CPN-UML cadres attacked Gen-Z youths during a demonstration in Simara on Wednesday.
Following hours of discussions between the district security council and Gen-Z representatives, a verbal agreement was finalised late Friday evening.
‘Today we decided that those who attacked us will be held accountable by the authorities. Till today, three people have been arrested and a complaint has been filed against five who are yet to be detained. We also have filed another complaint against two attackers. The authorities have promised that they will face judicial consequences,’ Samrat Upadhyay, Bara District Coordinator of the Gen-Z group, told ANI after the meeting.
Upadhyay added that the protest would remain paused but would only be fully withdrawn once all accused individuals are arrested and legal action is taken.
The meeting was held at the Armed Police Force Nepal Technical Training School and was attended by Gen-Z leaders Sudhan Gurung, Purushottam Yadav and Shiva Yadav.
Gen-Z supporters in Simara halted demonstrations from 4:30 pm (local time) on Thursday. The group had presented six demands to the authorities, led by Bara Chief District Officer Dharmaendra Kumar Mishra.
‘The administration has promised to fulfil our demands within three days. We will see how they stand up to their promise, and we will have a formal agreement with them on how they address our demands,’ Upadhyay said.
Officials had called the group for talks on Thursday, but Gen-Z leaders refused until arrests were made. By Friday evening, police had detained three individuals, including two elected ward chairs from the CPN-UML — Dhan Bahadur Shrestha of ward 2 and Kaimuddin Ansari of ward 6. Another accused, Arvind Sah, identified as the main planner of the attack, was arrested in Hetauda on Thursday night.
The Gen-Z group has demanded the arrest of all remaining individuals named in the complaint.
‘We will again come into the streets demanding punishment for those goons who have been named. The next movement will be a collective one, where the locals of Simara will be on the streets along with support from people all across Nepal,’ Upadhyay told ANI.
He added that those who attacked them were followers of UML leader Mahesh Basnet.
The clash occurred on Wednesday when Gen-Z youths called for a peaceful demonstration demanding that former prime ministers and ministers be brought to justice for alleged atrocities committed during the September uprising. UML cadres reportedly attacked the protestors as senior party leaders, including General Secretary Shankar Pokharel and politburo member Mahesh Basnet, were travelling to Simara for a youth mobilisation event in Parwanipur.
The complaint was lodged by Gen-Z district coordinator Samrat Upadhyay, who led the protest against UML leaders. After two days of tension, Simara remained calm on Friday, with no demonstrations or clashes, though security personnel were deployed. (ANI)
