Rhode Island [US], December 19 (HBTV): The suspect in the Brown University mass shooting was found dead on Thursday (local time) after taking his own life, CNN reported.
The body was discovered at a storage facility in Salem, New Hampshire, with authorities citing a statement by Providence Police Chief Oscar L. Perez Jr. According to officials, the suspect was identified as Claudio Valente, a 48-year-old former Brown University student and a Portuguese national.
CNN reported that Valente was found along with a satchel, two firearms and evidence that matched the crime scene. Providence police confirmed that a vehicle linked to him, found abandoned near the storage facility, was a rental car, as verified through FBI financial records.
The shooting, which occurred on December 13 at the Ivy League institution, left two students dead and nine others injured. Chief Perez Jr. said investigators have determined that Valente acted alone during the attack.
Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha said authorities will conduct ballistic and DNA testing on the firearms recovered but expressed confidence that there are no other suspects involved. He added that the motive behind the shooting remains unclear. Officials are also examining a possible connection between the Brown University shooting and the killing of an MIT professor earlier this week in Massachusetts.
University President Christina Hull Paxson said Valente had previously been enrolled in a physics programme at Brown but had no affiliation with the university at the time of the attack.
