Baryl Vanneihsangi becomes 1st woman to preside over Mizoram state assembly

Mizoram has scripted a new chapter in its history with a woman presiding over the state’s legislative assembly session for the first time with Baryl Vanneihsangi as its Speaker.

Aizawl, Mizoram, March 8 (HBTV): Mizoram on Friday scripted a new chapter in its history with a woman presiding over the state’s legislative assembly session for the first time. On March 7, Baryl Vanneihsangi , occupied the Speaker's seat to preside over a session.                 



Baryl Vanneihsangi became Mizoram's first female assembly speaker marking the emergence of women in policymaking and state government leadership.       



Mizoram voted for three women to the state legislature for the first time. Vanneihsangi of the Zorem People's Movement was one of them.       



In December 2023, the ZPM emerged victorious by securing 27 out of the 40 seats in the Mizoram assembly elections.              



Earlier, the 32-year-old Vanneihsangi also made history as the youngest member of the state’s legislative assembly.                   



Before her career a legislator, Baryl Vanneihsangi served as a member of the Aizawl Municipal Corporation. She has a Master's in Arts degree from the North Eastern Hill University in Shillong in Meghalaya. Reports said she has also worked as a television anchor.
