Guwahati, Assam, March 24 (HBTV): A fourth-year student of Biotechnology at Guwahati Indian Institute of Technology has been detained after he stated on a social media platform that he had joined the terror outfit. After that, he went missing from the Guwahati IIT campus.

The development comes close on the heels of the arrests of India ISIS chief Harish Farooqi by Assam authorities in the state’s Dhubri area.

After stating to have joined the terrorist organization, Tauseef Ali Farooqui wrote an open letter on LinkedIn stating the reason for his decision.

According to police sources, a lookout alert was issued. Farooqi is reportedly a resident of Zakirnagar, Okhla, New Delhi. He was found from Hajo in Kamrup district.

He has been detained for interrogation. STF sources added that he was taken to his hostel room where the police found a black flag similar to the ISIS flag, among others. Police said he was a loner and did not have friends in the campus and was a reserved person.

Additional Superintendent of Police Kalyan Kumar Pathak said, "After receiving an email, we got about to verify the authenticity of the contents and started an investigation." The email was sent by the student, in which he claimed that he was on the way to join the ISIS.

Pathak said the IIT-Guwahati authorities were immediately contacted, who informed them that the student had been "missing' since noon and his mobile phone was also switched off.

The head of the ISIS in India, Haris Farooqi was arrested along with his associates on Wednesday by the Assam police. His associate Anurag Singh alias Rehan belongs to Panipat. Singh reportedly converted to Islam. His wife is said to be a Bangladeshi national.

Farooqi was suspected to have been hiding in Bangladesh and allegedly carried out radicalization activities. He is alleged to have been instrumental in setting up modules in Jharkhand, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Goa, Punjab, Maharashtra, and Karnataka. Farooqui, who hails from Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh, was wanted by the National Investigation Agency.
