The Naga Council Dimapur has threatened with action if the government does not address the question of extortion and illegal taxation against which Nagaland's business community is protesting.

Chumoukedima, Nagaland, April 27 (HBTV): The Naga Council has threatened to bring in all the civil society originations and tribal hohos for further action if the government does not address the question of extortion and illegal taxation against which Nagaland’s business community is protesting.

The council issued a copy of a representation to the chief secretary of Nagaland. The council said it had met with tribal hohos, unions, and associations on April 27. The organizations expressed gratitude to the state government for taking the matter seriously and for ordering that all cases of extortion and collection of taxes shall be placed under the National Security Act.

The council has stated that no illegal taxation or extortion activities will be “entertained” for Naga political groups.

The Naga political issue is the root cause of ‘illegal collection of money from the business communities and public,’ the council stated.

The council expressed strong support to the indefinite shutter-down agitation in Dimapur district but stated that it will not allow arbitrary imposition of bandhs/strikes in the district without permission in the days to come.

The community organizations have asked the Dimapur Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Nagaland state government to resolve the matter within two days.

Further, the council gave a 45 days’ notice to the Home department and the district administration to verify and scrutinize all existing unions, association, and welfare organizations.
