Agartala, Tripura, February 28 (HBTV): A large number of business outlet owners on Tuesday gathered in front of West Agartala Police Station in Agartala in Tripura demanding action against a couple who allegedly took several crore of rupees from bank depositors.

The depositors claimed that a person said to be a Tripura State Cooperative Bank agent by the name of Pijush Datta had been collecting monthly installments for recurring deposit accounts from local businessmen for years.

When the depositors approached Tripura State Cooperative Bank, Lake Chowmuhani branch, at the time of deposit maturity, the bank officials allegedly resorted to delay tactics.

Speaking to reporters in front of the West Agartala Police Station, a businessman said the depositors had contacted the bank’s authorities. The manager informed that the collection agent of the bank was missing.

The person’s wife, one Soma Datta, reportedly informed the bank authorities that the accused had disappeared and was not in contact with his family members.

Further, the agitators said the bank had never taken any initiative to tell its customers that the money collected from them was not being deposited in their bank accounts.

Another customer of the Tripura State Cooperative Bank said he had approached the bank to track the transactions of the bank account. He was told that everything was ‘fine.’

An FIR has been lodged against the accused person, his wife, and the bank authorities.
