Assam, February 27 (HBTV): With the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) preparing to take effect in Assam, the state’s police forces are bracing for potential protests. The authorities have issued orders cancelling all leave for the police starting March 10.

The move comes amid efforts by the police force to quell any demonstrations by party organizations opposed to the controversial legislation.

According to India Today NE, the director general of police of Assam, GP Singh, has had meetings with police officers of districts that were worst-affected by the CAA agitations in 2019. The officers included officers in-charge of Dibrugarh, Jorhat, and Golaghat establishments during the past one week, followed by meeting with all officers including OCs at Guwahati.

GP Singh is said to have instructed officers to ensure the readiness of tear gas, batons, and other crowd control equipment at every police station.

India Today NE quoted the DGP as saying that the Assam police was preparing for potentially sensitive situations because the elections are likely to be announced anytime soon.

“Our preparations are for maintaining peaceful environment in the state in the run up, and during the elections so that every voter gets a chance to vote freely and elections are conducted fairly," India Today NE quoted the DGP.

Singh said further that the Assam Police remain committed to maintain peace in the state at all cost. A stern warning has been issued to officers on duty stating that any mishandling or misconduct will result in severe disciplinary action. The actions include suspension and even termination from service, the report stated.

Top police officials in each district have been instructed to crack down on any activities supporting any anti-CAA movements.
