Chumoukedima, Nagaland, December 4 (HBTV): Day-four of the Hornbill Festival highlights an important message from SEBI’s “SEBI vs Scam” mission—beware of fake promises and the illusion of guaranteed returns. As visitors explore the vibrant festival, SEBI’s Financial Awareness Stall continues to stand out as a trusted space for learning, guidance, and investor protection.
One of the biggest threats today is the rise of investment schemes that promise “guaranteed,” “assured,” or “risk-free” returns. SEBI is educating festival-goers about how such claims are clear red flags and often used to lure unsuspecting individuals into fraudulent schemes.
According to a handout from the SEBI on Thursday, the common tactics used in Guaranteed Return Scams include assured high returns with zero risk. This is something no market-linked investment can legitimately offer, the SEBI reminded.
Other tactics are unregistered advisors or influencers claiming insider knowledge or “special access”; Ponzi-style schemes where returns are paid from money collected from new investors; fake apps and websites that mimic genuine financial platforms; pressure tactics urging quick decisions to avoid “missing out”; misuse of SEBI’s name to appear credible without actual registration
To help people stay safe from such tactics, the SEBI has set up an active and engaging presence at the festival.
One-on-one support for individuals who have faced or suspect financial scams; guidance on reporting frauds through official SEBI channels; verification help to check if an advisor, intermediary, or entity is SEBI-registered; awareness sessions explaining how to identify false promises and unrealistic claims; an engaging Scam-Smart Quiz that teaches participants how to spot scam patterns; educational material on safe investing, digital awareness, and investor rights; SEBI’s initiative empowers visitors to make informed decisions, stay alert, and protect their financial future;
‘Remember: If someone promises guaranteed returns, it’s a guaranteed scam,’ the SEBI warns people.
