New Delhi [India], January 8 (HBTV): Nestle India on Wednesday said it does not import or sell any of the infant formula products that have been withdrawn or recalled globally, asserting that all baby food products sold in the country are manufactured locally.

The Switzerland-headquartered company had earlier announced a recall of certain batches of infant formula products in some countries after testing of arachidonic acid (ARA) oil and related oil mixes detected a quality issue with an ingredient supplied by a leading vendor.

Speaking to ANI, Nestle India said, ‘Nestle India does not import or sell any of the affected products or batches that have been withdrawn or recalled. All infant formula brands sold in India are manufactured locally. We have conducted thorough testing on these products and can confirm that they meet all FSSAI and applicable rules and regulations.’

The company further stated that the recalls were initiated as a precautionary measure and that no illnesses have been reported so far. Clarifying its position, Nestle India said consumer safety remains its top priority and that all its products comply fully with FSSAI norms and other applicable regulations.

According to the company, the precautionary recall or withdrawal in certain countries applies only to specific infant formula batches produced in Europe, following the detection of a quality issue with an ingredient provided by a supplier. Nestle said no illnesses linked to the affected products have been confirmed to date.

Nestle has issued a voluntary recall of certain infant formula products, including SMA, BEBA and NAN, in multiple countries due to potential contamination with cereulide, a toxin produced by Bacillus cereus bacteria. Countries that have issued public recall notices include the UK, Ireland, Germany, France, Switzerland, Australia, Mainland China, Hong Kong and New Zealand, among others.

In an official statement, Nestle said symptoms associated with cereulide exposure could include severe or persistent vomiting, diarrhoea or unusual lethargy, typically appearing between 30 minutes and six hours after exposure. However, the company reiterated that no confirmed cases of illness have been reported in any country so far.

Nestle also advised parents and caregivers to discontinue use of the affected products in markets where the recall applies and to consult a paediatrician or healthcare provider if they have concerns about their child’s health or nutrition.
