New Delhi (Delhi) [India], January 31 (HBTV): Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi on Friday felicitated two Bactrian camels, two Zanskar ponies and two Army Dogs for their exceptional contribution to military operations in some of the country’s most challenging deployment areas.
The Bactrian camels, deployed in the cold deserts of Ladakh, have played a vital role in high-altitude logistics by carrying heavy loads across difficult terrain and steep gradients. The Zanskar ponies, an indigenous and endangered breed, have supported troops in the icy heights of the Siachen Glacier and forward areas, while the Army Dogs, trained for surveillance, tracking and operational tasks, have significantly enhanced operational effectiveness across diverse terrains.
The felicitation recognised the endurance, loyalty and silent service of these animal warriors, who continue to operate alongside Indian Army personnel in extreme conditions.
Meanwhile, this year’s Republic Day parade is set to highlight India’s military capabilities with a special focus on animal logistics and natural defence systems. For the first time, a dedicated animal contingent from the Remount and Veterinary Corps of the Indian Army will march at the Republic Day Parade 2026 on Kartavya Path.
Known as ‘Silent Warriors’, the contingent will feature Bactrian camels, Zanskar ponies, Indian-breed Army dogs and conventional military dogs, showcasing the Army’s reliance on animals in terrains such as Ladakh and Siachen where modern technology often faces limitations.
The contingent will be accompanied by Him Yodhas of the Indian Defence Forces equipped with bullet-resistant jackets, cameras, GPS, radios and advanced surveillance systems, along with a Glacier ATV mounted on a vehicle. (ANI)
