Bijapur (Chhattisgarh) [India], May 31 (HBTV): Aiming to address learning loss and improve the academic proficiency of students in Classes 4 and 5, the administration in the Naxal-affected Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh is conducting the Kamaal Ka Summer Camp during the summer vacations.
Under the initiative, students attend daily two-hour sessions focused on Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN), which are critical for their progression to higher classes. These sessions are facilitated by senior students who have cleared their higher secondary certificate exams or are currently pursuing it. College students and graduates are also part of the teaching team.
‘Several activities are being carried out in the district as part of the ongoing summer camp, and Kamaal Ka Summer Camp is one of the activities. The basic objective of this camp is to enhance the efficiency of students who dealt with learning loss during the COVID-19 pandemic when the classes were taking place in an online mode,’ said Bijapur Collector Sambit Mishra.
‘With these summer classes, we are making an effort to improve the efficiency of students proceeding to the next classes from standard fourth and fifth so that they may not face difficulties in reading, writing and mathematics when the new academic session commences,’ he added.
According to the administration, approximately 400 village-based volunteers—senior students from schools and colleges—are conducting the classes, benefitting more than 4,000 students across the district.
An officer from the School Education Department noted that the pandemic had severely disrupted in-person learning, resulting in a noticeable decline in academic performance. In response, the Kamaal Ka Summer Camp was launched by the district administration in collaboration with Pratham Education Foundation.
The officer further informed that Pratham provided volunteers with a daylong training session and distributed essential study materials to support the initiative.
