Bijapur (Chhattisgarh) [India], November 12 (HBTV): Canine Dipsy, an Indian breed sniffer dog of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), was praised by officers on Tuesday for her bravery and IED detection skills after being mentioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his Mann Ki Baat episode.

Latif Sahu, Commandant of the 228th Battalion of the CRPF, said it was Prime Minister Modi’s vision to promote Indian breeds like Dipsy, who can be efficiently used for breeding due to their strong health and resilience.

‘It is the vision of PM Modi that he promoted the Indian breed, and this breed can be used efficiently due to its feature of not falling ill for a long time,’ said Sahu.

He highlighted Dipsy’s adaptability to hot and humid weather, as well as her endurance. ‘Dipsy, an Indian breed, can easily adapt to hot and humid weather. Mudhol Hound performs well for a long time without falling ill. Dipsy is a sniffer trained for long patrolling and IED detection,’ he added.

The canine has saved the lives of CRPF personnel twice by detecting improvised explosive devices (IEDs), earning her the title of hero of the battalion. Her bravery brought pride to the entire unit, especially after Prime Minister Modi recognised her achievements in his Mann Ki Baat programme.

‘Dipsy has detected IEDs two times, saved the lives of officers... Dipsy was the hero of our battalion, which has enhanced our respect, when PM Modi in the Mann Ki Baat episode talked about her bravery. The whole unit is happy,’ said Sahu.

Constable Pyarelal, Dipsy’s handler, recalled that during a patrol last year, Dipsy alerted the team to the presence of an IED. The Bomb Disposal Squad and the Deep Search Mine/Metre Detector team later located and safely defused the explosive, saving lives.

‘The canine did not fall sick for a long time and enthusiastically performed the assigned task,’ said Pyarelal, adding that Dipsy could adapt to any season and did not require a special diet.

Following the government’s plan to eradicate armed naxalism by March 31, 2026, Dipsy’s bravery and contributions in anti-Naxal operations are expected to be recorded prominently in history.

Sahu also mentioned that the CRPF’s 228th Battalion shares a close bond with its canine members. He said that during a recent operation, a dog named Rolo sacrificed his life in the line of duty, and a hall at the unit headquarters has been dedicated in his memory.

‘Canines are an inseparable part of forces, and they are very useful,’ said Sahu.

Dipsy, trained for long patrols and IED detection, is part of the CRPF’s 228th Battalion deployed deep in the forests of Bijapur district near the Telangana border. Prime Minister Modi recently lauded her courage in detecting IEDs planted by Naxals, saving the lives of both security personnel and local residents.
