New Delhi [India], November 14 (HBTV): The Delhi Government has approved a new policy to provide compassionate employment to the dependents of victims who lost their lives in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. The decision was taken during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, according to a statement issued by the Chief Minister’s Office.

In a post on X, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated that the government has approved a policy aimed at offering jobs to the dependents of 1984 riot victims on compassionate grounds. The statement added that this step reflects the administration’s commitment to justice and economic rehabilitation for families who have been awaiting relief for more than four decades.

Sharing details of the decision, the Chief Minister said the newly approved policy is a significant move toward resolving long-pending cases of employment assistance that have remained unsettled since a Cabinet decision taken in 2007. She noted that, due to administrative challenges, the process had remained incomplete for nearly 18 years.

To address this delay, the government has introduced a structured and time-bound framework to ensure timely support for eligible families. According to the Chief Minister, one of the key features of the new policy is that dependents of victims who are now above 50 years of age and unable to take up employment will have the option to nominate a member of the next generation—such as a son, daughter, daughter-in-law or son-in-law—to receive the job benefit.

The government stated that this provision will ensure that the intended assistance effectively reaches families and fulfils the purpose of the scheme. The clause also acknowledges that many eligible dependents have grown older over the years and may not be able to take up formal employment.

The Chief Minister said the policy also includes relaxations in age and educational qualifications where necessary, while ensuring compliance with Delhi High Court directions and the applicable legal framework.

A transparent and well-defined mechanism has been created for verification, grievance redressal, and departmental placement to ensure a fair and efficient appointment process.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta emphasised that the government remains committed to supporting the dignity and welfare of riot-victim families and ensuring that no eligible applicant faces further delays. She added that extending employment opportunities to the next generation aims not only to provide financial support but also to restore the self-respect of affected families.
