Bahraich (Uttar Pradesh) [India], October 16 (HBTV): A man-eating wolf that had attacked over 25 people in the Kaiserganj area of Bahraich was neutralised by shooters of the Forest Department early on Wednesday morning.
Forest Conservator of the Devipatan division, Dr Sammaran, stated that two of the four attacking wolves have been neutralised, while teams are searching for the remaining two, one of which is injured.
‘At 4 am today, we neutralised a wolf that had attacked humans. In total, there were four wolves, of which two have been neutralised, one is injured and missing, and one remains. We are using thermal drones to track these wolves. We have a total of five teams, including those equipped with tranquillisers and nets. On September 27, the Chief Minister visited Bahraich to review the situation and had ordered us to capture or neutralise the wolves. We always first try to tranquilise and capture the animal. If this fails, we kill the animal,’ he said.
Meanwhile, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Bahraich, Ram Singh Yadav, said that since September 9, six people have died and 25–26 others have been injured in wolf attacks in the Majhara Tokli area of Kaisarganj Tehsil in Bahraich district.
‘In the Majhara Tokli area of Kaisarganj Tehsil, wolf attack incidents have been reported since September 9. Since then, six people have died, and 25–26 others have been injured,’ he said.
Residents of Bahraich have been living in constant fear and distress since the series of attacks, many of which targeted children. The situation turned alarming after a young girl was killed in September by what was believed to be a wolf.
Yadav assured that drone cameras, traps, and nets have been installed in the area to capture the remaining predators.
‘Forest department teams are working in the area. Trap cameras, drone cameras, and nets have been installed to capture the wolf. The animal keeps changing its location, taking advantage of the sugarcane and paddy fields, which makes it difficult to catch,’ he added.
