Chandigarh (Haryana) [India], October 24 (HBTV): Senior IPS officer Y Puran Kumar died under suspicious circumstances in Chandigarh, succumbing to a gunshot wound on October 7.
His wife, Senior IAS officer Amneet P Kumar, has accused Haryana Director General of Police Shatrujeet Singh Kapoor and Rohtak Superintendent of Police Narendra Bijarnia of caste-based discrimination, mental harassment, and humiliation directed at her husband. She has demanded the immediate registration of an FIR against the officers.
Amneet stated that her husband had left a suicide note detailing the harassment he suffered at the hands of senior officials. She alleged that the accused officers, holding influential positions, could interfere with the investigation, making immediate arrests and an impartial probe essential. The complaint seeks action under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (formerly Section 306 IPC for abetment of suicide).
The case has drawn national attention due to the senior positions of both the deceased and the accused.
Separately, a Dalit minor reportedly died by suicide in Rohru, Shimla district, following caste-based discrimination. The incident triggered protests led by the Communist Party of India (Marxist), local residents, and Dalit rights organisations, demanding justice and strict action against the perpetrators.
Protesters carried placards condemning caste-based discrimination and what they described as the systemic failure to protect vulnerable groups. CPIM leaders Rakesh Singha and Sanjay Chauhan said it was "deeply shameful and unfortunate" that caste-based discrimination continues even 78 years after India’s independence. (ANI)
