Navi Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], January 4 (HBTV): Mumbai Police are investigating allegations of dowry harassment and divorce via triple talaq against a man working in the United Kingdom (UK) and his parents. A case has been registered under the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019, and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The complaint was lodged by the victim, a resident of Seawoods, with the NRI Sagar Police. She accused her husband, Aaqib Bhatiwala, and his parents of harassment and alleged that her husband divorced her through triple talaq during a video call.

According to the victim, she married Bhatiwala in 2022 in a ceremony conducted as per Muslim customs. Initially, the marriage seemed peaceful, but after moving into her in-laws' residence in Wadala, she claims the harassment began. The abuse reportedly escalated when she travelled to the UK with her husband and in-laws.

The victim alleges that following a domestic dispute, her husband confiscated her jewelry and sent her back to India, cutting off all communication. She further claims that during a video call, her husband divorced her using triple talaq and later denied her entry to their home in the UK.

Police have initiated an investigation based on her complaint.

Triple talaq, or talaq-e-biddat, is a practice under Islamic law where a husband can divorce his wife by pronouncing 'talaq' three times. However, in August 2017, a five-judge Supreme Court bench declared the practice 'manifestly arbitrary' and unconstitutional. Subsequently, in 2019, Parliament enacted the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, which criminalized triple talaq and made it punishable with up to three years of imprisonment.
