In a bid to curb illegal mining and transportation, the Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government is set to adopt advanced technologies under the Integrated Mining Surveillance System.

Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) [India], August 1 (HBTV): In a bid to curb illegal mining and transportation, the Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government is set to adopt advanced technologies under the Integrated Mining Surveillance System (IMSS).

According to an official release, the state is already employing tools such as drones, geo-fencing, RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) tags, and AI-based check-gates to monitor mining activities. The government is now preparing to implement weigh-in-motion (WIM) technology, which aims to save time and ensure 100 per cent accuracy in detecting overloaded vehicles.

The Department of Geology and Mining has introduced several measures to strengthen surveillance in mining zones. Through geo-fencing, camera-equipped weighbridges, and RFID tags on vehicles, authorities are actively tracking mineral transportation. Additionally, 57 unmanned IoT/AI-based check gates have been installed across 25 districts and are integrated with the Directorate's command centre.

To further reinforce enforcement, the department has sought assistance from the Transport Commissioner for the installation of WIM systems to clamp down on illegal mining and overloading.

In its push for greater transparency and efficiency, the state government is also promoting drone technology for surveying and monitoring mining sites. Technical and financial proposals have been invited from agencies such as UP Electronics, UPDESCO, and Shreetron India Limited. Drones will allow precise surveillance of mining areas and enable swift action against violations.

As part of its digital transparency initiative, the Yogi government has begun integrating the Upminemitra portal with the Parivesh portal of the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change. This integration will facilitate effective tracking of environmental clearance certificates and expedite regulatory responses in mining areas. The initiative is expected to not only curb illegal mining but also streamline the entire process and enhance environmental sustainability.

Weigh-in-motion (WIM) is an advanced system that measures the weight of heavy vehicles—such as mining or cargo trucks—while they are in motion. Using sensors embedded in road surfaces, the system captures real-time data on vehicle weight, speed, and other metrics without requiring the vehicle to stop. WIM improves operational efficiency, enhances road safety, ensures compliance with transport regulations, and contributes to cost savings while mitigating environmental impact.
