At least five people, including children, lost their lives in landslides that occurred in Kamrup (Metro) district over the past 24 hours, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority.

Guwahati (Assam) [India], May 31 (HBTV): Five people, including children, lost their lives in landslides that occurred in Kamrup (Metro) district over the past 24 hours, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).

A preliminary report released at 9:00 am today stated that urban flooding had affected the districts of Kamrup, Kamrup (Metro), and Cachar, impacting five Revenue Circles and a total of 10,150 people.

Three landslide incidents were reported in Guwahati yesterday.

ASDMA warned that continued heavy rainfall in Guwahati may cause waterlogging, disrupt traffic flow, and increase the risks of falling trees and localised landslides.

On Friday, Guwahati and several other regions across Assam experienced intense rainfall, leading to severe waterlogging in various localities such as Rukminigaon, Beltola Survey, Hatigaon, Geetanagar, Anil Nagar, Lakhimi Nagar, Jatia, Maligaon, and Panjabari.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma addressed the media at Lok Sewa Bhawan in Guwahati on Friday, saying, ‘The situation is not good. The situation will remain the same tomorrow also. The state government is monitoring the situation. Due to heavy rainfall in Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh, large areas have been affected. Tomorrow, in Kamrup and Kamrup (Metro), all state government employees will get a special casual leave, schools and colleges will remain shut, and private establishments are also advised to take measures accordingly.’

Local residents expressed frustration over recurring waterlogging issues in the city.

‘It has been raining continuously for three to four days, so water accumulates here. Even a little rain causes water to accumulate here. The government should come here and see and solve the water problem of the people living here,’ said one resident.

Another resident added, ‘Guwahati's condition remains the same every rainy season. Every time a vehicle breaks down, there is a fear of dying when such waterlogging happens.’
