Cachar (Assam) [India], February 19 (HBTV): Assam Rifles, in a joint operation with Cachar Police, seized heroin valued at INR 4.05 crores in Cachar district.
Acting on specific information regarding drug trafficking, the joint team launched an operation and apprehended one individual transporting the contraband via the Silchar Bypass near Maharpur late on February 17. The arrested individual, along with the seized vehicle, has been handed over to Cachar Police for further investigation, according to the Headquarters Inspector General, Assam Rifles (East).
Assam Rifles stated that it has been conducting sustained anti-drug operations in the region to dismantle narcotics networks and curb trafficking activities.
In a separate operation, Assam Rifles, along with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Manipur Police, conducted an anti-narcotics drive in the general area of Sehjang in Kangpokpi district, Manipur, following specific intelligence inputs on February 17.
The operation involved area domination and systematic searches of suspected cultivation sites. During the operation, the joint team detected illicit poppy cultivation spread across 22 acres, which was subsequently destroyed.
According to the Headquarters Inspector General, Assam Rifles (East), the destroyed cultivation had the potential to yield approximately 160 kilograms of opium, estimated to be worth multiple crores, delivering a major blow to drug trafficking networks operating in the region.
Three makeshift huts found near the cultivation area were also demolished during the operation.
Earlier, on Sunday, Assam Rifles established a Mobile Vehicle Check Post on State Highway-06 in Noney, Manipur, based on intelligence inputs regarding cigarette smuggling. A vehicle travelling from Churachandpur towards Kangpokpi was intercepted and subjected to a detailed inspection.
The seized consignment, valued at INR 2.9 crore, along with the vehicle, was handed over for further legal proceedings. Two individuals were apprehended in connection with the seizure.
