Agartala (Tripura) [India], January 8 (HBTV): Assam Rifles carried out an operation to destroy illegal ganja cultivation in the general areas of Dhanpur, Induria, Kacchakhala and Dhanmura, located about 66 km south of Agartala.

According to an official statement issued on Wednesday, the operation was conducted along with the Border Security Force (BSF), Tripura Police, Tripura State Rifles and the Forest Department, based on specific intelligence inputs.

During the operation, around six lakh young ganja plants cultivated over approximately 200 acres were destroyed. Officials said the estimated market value of the destroyed contraband was about INR 36 crore.

‘The operation highlights the continued vigilance and coordinated efforts of Assam Rifles, in collaboration with sister agencies, to curb illegal activities and maintain security in the region,’ the release stated.

Meanwhile, in a separate joint operation with the Customs Department in Silchar, Assam Rifles recovered counterfeit cigarettes worth INR 34 lakh from a godown on Tuesday. According to the Assam Rifles, the consignment was being transported via Silchar for further distribution within the state.

The force said it has been at the forefront of operations against counterfeit goods in the region, conducting regular drives to disrupt and dismantle counterfeit networks. It added that the seizure marked a significant milestone in ongoing efforts to combat counterfeit goods trafficking.

Earlier, Assam Rifles recovered 11.062 kg of methamphetamine tablets, a psychotropic substance with an estimated international market value of INR 33.186 crore, in Mizoram. Acting on credible intelligence inputs related to narcotics trafficking near the Indo-Myanmar border, Assam Rifles conducted a joint operation with Mizoram Police in the Kaifang area of Saitual district.

During the operation, unusual movement was detected near the suspected location. A subsequent search led to the recovery of the methamphetamine tablets. The seized contraband and a vehicle were handed over to Mizoram Police, Saitual, for further investigation and legal action.
