Guwahati (Assam) [India], September 27 (HBTV): The Hagrama Mohilary-led Bodoland People's Front (BPF) has secured a landslide victory in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections by winning 28 council seats, paving the way to form the next council.

According to the Assam State Election Commission, BPF won 28 seats, while the Pramod Boro-led United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) secured 7 seats, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 5 seats. The Congress failed to secure a single seat. Counting of votes was held on Friday.

Trinamool Congress leader Sushmita Dev said the results reflected public discontent with the BJP-led Assam government. ‘The results of the Bodoland Territorial Council are a decisive mandate against the Assam government. The churning has begun in Assam against divisive politics. My gratitude to those who voted for the Trinamool Congress, the candidates and workers who fought hard in our first endeavour in the region,’ she said.

In the last BTC election, UPPL and BJP had jointly formed the council. A senior BPF leader said the oath-taking ceremony is likely to take place in Kokrajhar on October 3.

This election saw 316 candidates contesting across five districts—Kokrajhar, Chirang, Udalguri, Baksa, and Tamulpur—under the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR). Kokrajhar district accounted for 12 of the 40 constituencies, with 100 candidates in the fray. Of these, 43 contested from the Kokrajhar sub-division, 48 from the Gossaigaon sub-division, and one from Parbatjhora.

Polling was held on September 22, with votes counted on September 26 amid tight security. Of the total 40 BTC constituencies, 30 are reserved for Scheduled Tribes (ST), five for non-STs, and five are unreserved. The constituencies together comprise 26.58 lakh voters, and polling was conducted across 3,279 polling stations.
