Guwahati (Assam) [India], May 12 (HBTV): After a decisive victory in the Assembly elections, Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday took oath as the Chief Minister of Assam for a second consecutive term.
The oath-taking ceremony, held at the Veterinary College ground in Khanapara, was attended by Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, BJP president Nitin Nabin, along with senior Union ministers and chief ministers and deputy chief ministers from several NDA-ruled states.
This marks the third consecutive NDA government in Assam.
Along with Sarma, four ministers were also sworn in, including two from the BJP and one each from its allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF). Those inducted into the Council of Ministers include Rameswar Teli, Atul Bora, Charan Boro and Ajanta Neog. Former minister and senior BJP leader Ranjeet Kumar Dass has been named as the NDA’s candidate for the post of Speaker of the state Assembly.
The NDA’s performance in the 2026 Assam Assembly elections saw the alliance secure 81 out of 126 seats, reflecting a strong mandate. Overall, the BJP-led NDA, including the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), collectively secured 101 seats, amounting to a three-fourths majority in the Assembly.
Both the Bodoland People’s Front and the Asom Gana Parishad won ten seats each as part of the NDA alliance.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma registered a decisive victory from his constituency, winning by a margin of over 80,000 votes. In his victory speech, he credited the 'double-engine' growth driven by the support of Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the past decade.
The 2026 election marked a shift in Assam’s political landscape, with a direct contest emerging between the BJP’s vision of 'transformation' and the Congress’s ideological opposition.
