Aizawl (Mizoram) [India], July 8 (HBTV): Chief Ministers and representatives from seven Northeastern states held a consultative meeting with members of the 16th Finance Commission in New Delhi, presenting a united front to advocate for region-specific financial support. Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma was among the key participants and presented the state’s primary concerns and demands.
The Northeastern states submitted a Joint Memorandum to the Commission, outlining shared challenges and the need for enhanced fiscal support from the Centre. Prominent leaders present at the meeting included Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, Tripura Finance Minister Pu Pranajit Singha Roy, and senior officials from across the region.
Chief Minister Lalduhoma made a detailed presentation on Mizoram’s financial priorities and highlighted several critical concerns. He stressed the need for a higher share in tax devolution, noting that it remains the largest source of revenue for Mizoram. He argued that a greater share is essential to meet the state’s development requirements.
He also addressed the disadvantage Mizoram faces under population-based allocation formulas, explaining that smaller states often receive insufficient central assistance due to their lower population figures. Lalduhoma urged the Commission to consider alternative models that do not penalise states with smaller populations.
The Chief Minister further called for adjustments in the Disaster Risk Index to reflect Mizoram’s specific vulnerabilities. He cited frequent landslides, cloudbursts, heavy rains, and forest fires as recurring hazards that demand tailored financial support from the Centre.
Highlighting the high cost of transportation in Mizoram’s hilly and remote terrain, he sought special financial consideration to mitigate the logistics challenges faced by the state.
Additionally, Lalduhoma emphasised the importance of strengthening autonomous District Councils and rural local bodies. He advocated for increased funding and the continuation of grants to these institutions to ensure inclusive development, particularly in remote and underserved regions of the state.
