Washington DC [US], May 28 (HBTV): US President Donald Trump has claimed that Canada is considering his proposal to become the 51st state of the United States, in exchange for inclusion in the proposed “Golden Dome” missile defence system at no cost.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote: 'I told Canada, which very much wants to be part of our fabulous Golden Dome System, that it will cost 61 Billion Dollars if they remain a separate, but unequal, Nation, but will cost ZERO DOLLARS if they become our cherished 51st State. They are considering the offer!'
According to Al Jazeera, Trump had unveiled on May 20 a USD 175 billion missile defence initiative—dubbed the Golden Dome—designed to protect the US against aerial threats, including those launched from space. The programme, said to be modelled on Israel’s Iron Dome system, will include next-generation technologies across land, sea, and space, including space-based sensors and interceptors.
Sean Parnell, Assistant to the Secretary of Defence for Public Affairs and Senior Advisor, confirmed the announcement alongside Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth in the Oval Office. ‘This bold initiative represents a historic investment in American security and fulfils our duty to protect the homeland,’ Parnell stated.
Trump said the Golden Dome project is expected to be completed within three to four years.
The statement regarding Canada follows Trump’s meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on May 6. During that meeting, Trump congratulated Carney on his electoral win, saying, ‘It’s a great honour to have Prime Minister Mark Carney with us. A few days ago, he won a very big election in Canada. And I think Canada chose a very talented person.’
Despite Trump’s advocacy, Carney firmly rejected the idea of Canadian annexation, reaffirming his country’s independence. ‘As you know from real estate, there are some places that are never for sale,’ Carney remarked during the joint appearance.
As per reports, Canada has not issued any formal response to Trump’s latest comments. (ANI)
