Washington DC (US), May 29 (HBTV): US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday announced that the United States will begin revoking visas of Chinese students, particularly those with ties to the Chinese Communist Party or those studying in critical academic fields.
In a post on X, Rubio stated: ‘The U.S. will begin revoking visas of Chinese students, including those with connections to the Chinese Communist Party or studying in critical fields.’
This move marks another step in the Donald Trump administration's efforts to tighten controls on foreign enrolment in higher education institutions.
Earlier in the day, former President Trump intensified his criticism of Harvard University by suggesting a cap on foreign student admissions at 15 per cent. He claimed that a significant portion of international students admitted by Harvard are ‘troublemakers’ and contribute to unrest in the country.
‘We don't want to see shopping centres explode. We don't want to see the kind of riots that you had,’ Trump said.
He questioned the proportion of foreign students at Harvard, alleging that many came from ‘areas of the world that are very radicalised.’
‘Why would 31 percent? Why would a number be so big? I think they (Harvard University) should have a cap of maybe around 15 per cent. We have people that want to go to Harvard and other schools but they can't get in because we have foreign students there,’ he added.
‘I want to make sure that foreign students are people that can love our country. We don't want to see shopping centres explode. We don't want to see the kind of riots that you had, and I'll tell you what, many of those students didn't go anywhere, many of those students were troublemakers caused by the radical left,’ Trump said.
According to CNN, Harvard has stated in court documents that full-time international students constitute about a quarter of its student body. The university has resisted several government demands, including requests for complete conduct records of foreign students and for audits to confirm the expansion of ‘viewpoint diversity.’
