Washington DC [US], January 8 (HBTV): US President Donald Trump has signed a memorandum directing the withdrawal of the United States from 66 international organisations, conventions and treaties that his administration says are ‘contrary to the interests’ of the country.
The announcement was made through a statement accompanying the Presidential Memoranda released by the White House, which outlined the withdrawal from 35 non-UN organisations and 31 United Nations entities.
Among the non-UN organisations listed are the India and France-led International Solar Alliance, along with key environmental and climate-related bodies such as the International Union for Conservation of Nature and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Other organisations include the International Energy Forum, the International Renewable Energy Agency, the Partnership for Atlantic Cooperation and the Global Counterterrorism Forum, among others.
The memorandum also lists several UN bodies from which the US has withdrawn, including the Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the International Law Commission, the International Trade Centre, the Peacebuilding Commission, UN Energy, the UN Population Fund and UN Water.
According to the executive order, Trump has directed all executive departments and agencies to take immediate steps to implement the withdrawal from the organisations named in the memorandum as soon as possible. For United Nations entities, withdrawal would involve ceasing participation in or funding to those bodies to the extent permitted by law.
The White House statement said the decision followed a report submitted by the Secretary of State and consultations with Cabinet members. It added that the President determined continued participation in or support for these organisations was not in the interests of the United States.
The move comes nearly a year after the Trump administration announced its withdrawal from the World Health Organization in January 2025, citing mismanagement of the COVID-19 pandemic. The US also withdrew from UNESCO in July 2025, stating that membership in the organisation was not in the national interest of the United States.
