The Great June Uprising Day, also known as Manipur Unity Day, is being observed annually since 2001, on every 18th of June at Kekrupat, Manipur, to pay tributes to 18 persons who lost their lives in June, 2001 movement of the people to protect the territorial integrity of Manipur.
This year, due to the pandemic, the observance was marked without public functions but only with the ritual and floral tribute as per the decision of the organising committee. However, leaders from community organizations and students’ leaders and family and relatives of the martyrs all came to pay floral tributes since early morning.
Mention may be made here that in June 2001, the Union government signed the amended ceasefire agreement with the NSCN (IM) and inserted the words "without territorial limits", following which there were protests and arson at many places. To control the uprising, security personnel resorted to firing live bullets in which 18 people died while also injuring many.
