Guwahati, Assam, March 2 (HBTV): The Assam government on Saturday organized a ceremony at the Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra International Auditorium in Guwahati to mark the ceremonial distribution of financial grants to former cadres of the militant group United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) and their family members.

Dr. Himanta Biswa Sharma, the chief minister of Assam, presided over the proceedings as the event’s chief guest.

The ceremony held special significance as it symbolized the culmination of efforts towards peace building after the ULFA signed a ‘memorandum of settlement’ with both the government of India and the government of Assam on December 29, 2023.

During the ceremony, Himanta Biswa Sharma distributed Fixed Deposit certificates amounting to INR four lakh to each of the 852 former ULFA cadres as part of the surrender/rehabilitation scheme of the government of India.

Additionally, INR three lakh each was disbursed to 45 individuals who were injured in counter-insurgency operations, along with a special package of INR three lakh from the government of Assam.

Moreover, a sum of INR five lakh each was granted to eight individuals who were ‘oppressed,’ and INR 10 lakh each to the next of kin of 31 missing ULFA cadres.

This totaled 936 beneficiaries who received the rehabilitation grant.

The ceremony was organized by the Assam Home department with the Special Branch of the Assam Police.
