Mokokchung (Nagaland) [India], May 22 (HBTV): Lt Gen Vikas Lakhera, AVSM, SM, Director General of Assam Rifles, visited the Assam Rifles Battalion in Mokokchung, Nagaland, on Tuesday to assess the prevailing security situation in the region.
During his visit, the General Officer also travelled to Sungratsu village to meet and interact with 105-year-old Assam Rifles veteran Havildar Mering Ao, SC (Retd), one of the most distinguished and respected figures in the force’s history.
Havildar Mering Ao, born on November 15, 1920, is a celebrated veteran of the 3rd Battalion Assam Rifles and the oldest gallantry award recipient in the force. A participant in World War II, he fought in historic battles in Kohima and Burma. In 1960, during a counter-insurgency operation in Nagaland, he exhibited exceptional bravery by eliminating one insurgent and injuring two others. For his gallant actions, he was awarded the Ashok Chakra Class III (renamed the Shaurya Chakra) by then President Dr Rajendra Prasad on April 21, 1960.
His life and legacy continue to inspire generations, embodying the dedication and spirit of the Assam Rifles.
Lt Gen Lakhera presented Havildar Ao with a token of appreciation, honouring his legendary service and unwavering commitment to the nation. The interaction was a poignant moment reflecting the Assam Rifles' enduring ethos of honouring its heroes and preserving their legacy.
