Sangareddy (Telangana) [India], January 30 (HBTV): Approximately 22 students were hospitalised after consuming mid-day meals at a primary school in Sangareddy district of Telangana, officials said.

According to a police official on Thursday, the students had consumed sambar and rice in the afternoon and soon began experiencing symptoms such as stomach pain and discomfort.

The students were immediately shifted to a nearby hospital for medical attention. Officials later said all 22 students were in stable condition and were expected to be discharged.

A Narayanked police official said around 22 students were hospitalised after consuming sambar and rice, adding that they experienced stomach pain and were immediately taken to the hospital for treatment. The official said all students were stable and that no complaints had been received from parents.

Further details regarding the cause of the illness are awaited, and authorities said the situation is being closely monitored.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident, more than 33 students fell ill after consuming mid-day meals at the Odakkalpalayam Government Middle School near Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu, officials said.

The incident occurred on January 4 under the Sultanpet Union jurisdiction. Shortly after having the meal, around 33 students complained of vomiting, severe stomach pain and discomfort.

The affected students were rushed to private hospitals in Sultanpet and nearby areas, with some admitted to Aram Hospital in Sultanpet, while others were treated at Purushothaman Hospital and Royal Care Hospital in Senjeri Malai.

Following the incident, the Sultanpet Block Development Officer visited the school and conducted an inquiry. Orders were issued to inspect the quality of the mid-day meal, and the Sultanpet police launched an investigation.

The incidents have renewed concerns over food safety and monitoring of the mid-day meal scheme in government schools. (ANI)
