New Delhi [India], August 20 (HBTV): The Delhi Police have identified the accused in the attack on Chief Minister Rekha Gupta as Rajesh Khimji, a resident of Rajkot in Gujarat. Officials said his name and address are being verified through documents.

According to sources, the accused had come to the Jan Sunvai with a plea seeking the release of a relative who is imprisoned. He was apprehended and taken to the Civil Lines police station for questioning.

Following the incident, the Delhi Police, Chief Secretary and Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh visited CM Gupta's residence.

Delhi BJP chief Virendraa Sachdeva said that the Chief Minister's condition is stable and that she had been examined by doctors. 'The CM is a strong woman and she has not cancelled her programmes,' he said.

Sachdeva explained that during the Jan Sunvai, a man approached the Chief Minister, presented some papers and suddenly tried to pull her towards him. 'During this, there was a little jostling. People nabbed him. Who he is, and other details are being investigated by the police. The CM is stable. Doctors have examined her. It seems that she suffered a light blow to her head. The slap or stone-throwing stories are fabricated. Such incidents in politics are condemnable. Jan Sunvai will continue. CM is resting right now but she has said that she will not cancel her programmes,' he told reporters.

Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, Atishi, also condemned the incident. In a post on X, she wrote, 'The attack on Delhi's Chief Minister Rekha Gupta is highly condemnable. In a democracy, there is a place for disagreement and protest, but there is no place for violence. It is hoped that the Delhi Police will take the strictest action against the culprits. It is hoped that the Chief Minister is completely safe.'
