New Delhi [India], June 15 (HBTV): A mobile tower collapsed in Safdarjung Enclave on Saturday night after gusty winds and heavy rainfall lashed parts of the National Capital. No casualties or injuries were reported in the incident.

The downpour brought much-needed relief to Delhi residents following a prolonged heatwave. Several parts of the city experienced rainfall, resulting in a drop in temperatures and an improvement in air quality.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a severe thunderstorm and strong wind alert for the city, advising residents to remain indoors. According to the IMD, a ‘moderate to intense spell of rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning, and squally winds reaching speeds of 80–100 kmph’ swept through Delhi during the early hours of Sunday.

Visuals from Krishi Bhavan, Rafi Marg, and Udyog Bhawan showed heavy rain accompanied by strong winds battering the city, providing relief from the oppressive heat.

Two thundersqualls accompanied by hailstorm activity were recorded at Safdarjung between 03:48 to 03:50 hrs IST and 03:58 to 04:00 hrs IST. During the first squall, wind speeds reached 82 kmph, while the second saw peak gusts of 104 kmph, the IMD said.

The weather department urged residents to exercise caution. ‘Stay indoors and avoid travel unless necessary,’ the IMD advisory stated, citing risks posed by flying debris and low visibility.

Despite the relief from the heat, the intense wind and rain caused disruptions to early morning traffic, and waterlogging was reported in several low-lying areas.

Earlier this week, the IMD had warned that Delhi-NCR could experience heatwave-like conditions, with temperatures potentially exceeding 45°C.
