Chumoukedima, Nagaland, June 16 (HBTV): The Chakhroma Youth Organization has issued an ultimatum, addressed to the chief secretary of the government of Nagaland, demanding, among others, de-recognition of Moava village, under Medziphema subdivision in Chumoukedima district.

A copy of the group’s statement addressed to the government received here also demanded the termination of the services of the head ‘gaon bura’ (village elder or chief) of the village. The youth organization even demanded “discontinuation” of the village’s own hereditary role of Gaon Bura or chief of the village. The rationale for this demand the Chakhroma youth organization gave in its statement was that “as the only tribes recognized by the Act of 1978 to practice” such as system are the Sumi tribe, Konyak, and the Ao tribe.

Further, the organization demanded immediate suspension of all developmental funds, schemes, and government-aided assistance extended to Moava village until compliance with lawful directives is ensured.

The organization also demanded immediate suspensions of the issuance of new birth certificates, permanent resident certificates, indigenous certificates, and similar official documents by the village authorities. This action must be taken until they comply with the directives of the government and honor Naga customary laws, the statement stated.

Another demand the Chakhroma youth organization made was what it called “facilitation” of the process relating to the expulsion of three individuals from Moava village — in accordance with Angami customary practices.
