Dima Hasao (Assam) [India], January 7 (HBTV): Nine coal mine workers have been trapped in the Umrangso coal mine in Umrangshu, Assam’s Dima Hasao district.

A group of approximately nine coal workers have been trapped in a quarry at Kalamati in Umrangso on Monday morning. According to available information, water streams from a nearby mine entered the mine where the laborers were working. Several workers were able to escape, but most others could not and remain trapped.

The incident reportedly occurred around 9:00 AM on Monday. However, reports indicate it was only around 3:00 PM that two pumps were installed to drain water from the mine.

No detailed information is available about the conditions of the workers inside the mine.

District Commissioner Shimanta Kumar Das and Superintendent of Police of Dima Hasao, Mayank Kumar Jha, have rushed to the spot.

Das said he and Jha had left for the Assam quarry on the Assam-Meghalaya border, approximately 150 kilometres from Haflong.
