The Hague [Netherlands], May 20 (HBTV): Netherlands Defence Minister Ruben Brekelmans on Sunday held discussions with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in The Hague, focusing on the growing security challenges in Europe and Asia. Brekelmans emphasised that cooperation with India is more vital than ever in today’s global climate.
In a post on X, the Dutch minister wrote: ‘In these turbulent times close cooperation with India is more important than ever. Great honour to receive Minister of Foreign Affairs S Jaishankar. We discuss security challenges in Asia/Europe and our Defence partnership. Looking forward to deepening our cooperation!’
EAM Jaishankar also shared details of the meeting, stating: ‘Pleased to meet Defence Minister Ruben Brekelmans in The Hague today. Exchanged views on our respective security perspectives and challenges. Also spoke about the benefits of forging a bilateral defence partnership.’
The two leaders discussed the scope and benefits of strengthening a bilateral defence partnership, recognising the strategic importance of aligning their nations' security priorities.
In addition to his meeting with Brekelmans, EAM Jaishankar interacted with members of the Indian community in the Netherlands. He expressed appreciation for their role in enhancing India-Netherlands relations: ‘Interacted with representatives of the Indian community this evening. Value the contribution of the community to building a stronger relationship between India and the Netherlands.’
Jaishankar arrived in the Netherlands on Monday morning (IST) as part of his official visit to the Netherlands, Denmark, and Germany from May 19 to 24.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the visit includes meetings with top leadership in all three countries to discuss a wide range of bilateral issues, as well as global and regional matters of mutual interest.
Jaishankar’s visit to Germany follows the appointment of Friedrich Merz as the new Federal Chancellor earlier this month. In the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Germany were among the international community members who expressed solidarity with India.
