Islamabad (Pakistan), November 29 (HBTV): The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has decided to arrest Bushra Bibi, the wife of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, in connection with the GBP 190 million reference. A team from NAB's Rawalpindi bureau will work with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police to facilitate the arrest.
The arrest decision follows an accountability court's issuance of non-bailable arrest warrants for Bushra Bibi on November 22, after she failed to attend eight consecutive hearings. The court also rejected her request for exemption from appearing and issued a show-cause notice to her bail guarantor.
Imran Khan, who is currently incarcerated in Adiala prison, appeared before the court, where objections were raised regarding a medical report submitted by Bushra Bibi's counsel. The court also pointed out that the couple had not submitted their statements as required under Section 342 of CrPC, 1898.
Bushra Bibi had previously been released on bail in October after serving around nine months in prison for the Toshakhana case.
In the ongoing case filed by NAB against Imran Khan, his wife, and others, the couple is accused of facilitating a settlement with a property tycoon that allegedly resulted in a loss of GBP 190 million to Pakistan's national exchequer. The couple is also accused of benefiting from land allotted for the establishment of Al-Qadir University, which was allegedly funded by the settlement.
The case relates to the settlement made between the PTI-led government and the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA), which involved the seizure of assets worth GBP 190 million from a Pakistani property tycoon. The NCA indicated that the assets would be transferred to the Pakistani government.
