Nearly a month after their alliance was routed in the West Bengal Assembly elections, cracks were seen developing between the Congress and CPM.

The latest reason for friction between the two parties is a social media post by CPM leader and Rajya Sabha MP Bikash Bhattacharjee on the 1970's Sainbari massacre, in which two members of a family in Burdwan were allegedly hacked to death by CPM members for their strong allegiance towards the Congress.

In his post written in Bangla, Bhattacharjee claims atrocities committed by armed Congress members at a village in Burdwan district in the 1970s which led to the attack by villagers on the Congress leaders.

In a letter to CPM Secretary Suryakanta Mishra, the West Bengal Pradesh Congress lashed out at Bhattacharjee's post, calling it "defamatory and derogatory".
