Guwahati (Assam) [India], July 1 (HBTV): NorthEast United FC, one of the founding members of the Indian Super League (ISL), has experienced a rollercoaster journey in the league’s history. While the club has made only three playoff appearances, it has consistently represented the pride of the North East and has played a crucial role in developing and nurturing young talent.
Amidst their highs and lows, NorthEast United FC has been home to some exceptionally talented players over the years.
A constant presence in the club’s early years, TP Rehenesh was one of NorthEast United FC’s first icons. Playing 49 matches across five seasons, he registered 13 clean sheets and made 142 saves. Though he missed out on major honours during his tenure, his consistency and longevity earn him the goalkeeper spot over current standout Gurmeet Singh.
At right-back, Reagan Singh claims the spot with 69 appearances and 11 clean sheets over five seasons. His standout performances came during the 2018–19 campaign under coach Eelco Schattorie, when the team reached the semi-finals for the first time. Ashutosh Mehta was a close contender, particularly for his role in the 2020–21 season, but Reagan’s overall contribution gives him the edge.
On the left flank, Gurjinder Kumar gets the nod for his reliability and strong performances, especially in the 2020–21 season. Buanthanglun Samte, a strong performer over the past one and a half seasons, comes a close second.
In central defence, Michel Zabaco stands out as the best centre-back in the club’s history. A commanding presence, Zabaco contributed to ten clean sheets in 42 appearances and was key in NorthEast United FC’s resurgence under coach Juan Pedro Benali. Partnering him is Asheer Akhtar, who, with two goals and an assist, has emerged as the club’s top Indian centre-back in recent years.
In midfield, Ahmed Bemammer brings balance and intelligence to the squad. A vital presence under Benali, he has led the team’s passing stats and excelled at breaking up opposition play. Khassa Camara was also a strong contender but Bemammer's consistency in the 2023–24 and 2024–25 seasons secures his place.
Joining him in midfield is Rowllin Borges, who rose to prominence in the 2018–19 season with four goals and two assists, helping the club to its first semi-final appearance. Borges’ evolution from a deep-lying midfielder to an advanced playmaker under Schattorie marks his impact.
In the attacking midfield role, Federico Gallego is an easy pick. With nine goals and 11 assists in 47 matches, he was instrumental in two semi-final appearances and is widely regarded as one of the most technically gifted players in the club's history.
Parthib Gogoi takes one of the attacking roles thanks to his rise as one of the league’s most exciting Indian talents. Known for his long-range goals, Gogoi has registered ten goals and eight assists in 57 appearances. He beats out Redeem Tlang and VP Suhair due to his consistency and flair.
On the opposite wing, Jithin MS secures the position with 15 goal contributions in over 50 appearances. His versatility across the front line and tactical flexibility under Benali edged out Imran Khan, who was notable in the 2020–21 season.
Leading the line is Moroccan striker Alaaeddine Ajaraie, who had a record-breaking 2024–25 season, scoring 23 goals and providing seven assists in 25 matches. He also ranked third in chances created, delivering one of the most complete performances by a forward in ISL history.
On the touchline, Juan Pedro Benali is selected as the all-time head coach. Having taken charge of a team that finished bottom in the 2022–23 season, Benali led them to a playoff spot within two seasons and also guided them to their first-ever silverware—the Durand Cup.
