Chandigarh (Punjab) [India], May 3 (HBTV): Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Saturday announced a compensation of INR 50 lakh and a government job for a family member of Navy Lieutenant Vinay Narwal, who was killed in the terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.

According to an official release, the Chief Minister said that a government job would be given to any family member, as per the wishes of Lt Vinay Narwal's parents.

Earlier in the day, Haryana State Commission for Women Chairperson Renu W Bhatia visited the residence of Lieutenant Narwal in Karnal and paid condolences to the bereaved family. Lt Vinay Narwal was among the 26 people killed in the Pahalgam terror attack that occurred on Tuesday afternoon.

Chairperson Bhatia remarked that speaking with the family reminded her of her own, and urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take the strictest action against the perpetrators so that women and daughters do not have to suffer such tragedies.

On Friday, the ashes of Lt Vinay Narwal were immersed in the Ganga at Har Ki Pauri in Haridwar, following traditional rituals and prayers. The naval officer was given an emotional farewell by his family members, including his father Rajesh Narwal and maternal uncle, in the presence of hundreds of mourners.

Former Cabinet Minister Madan Kaushik and several BJP workers also paid their respects at the ghat.

Lt Narwal’s father earlier expressed his faith in the Union government, stating that justice would be served, even as he described the loss as ‘unbearable and irreplaceable’.

On Wednesday, the final rites of Lt Narwal were conducted in Karnal with full military honours. A formal procession and a rifle salute were offered before the cremation ceremony.

Lieutenant Vinay Narwal, a native of Karnal, had recently tied the knot, with his wedding reception held on April 16. He had been posted in Kochi and was visiting Jammu and Kashmir on leave. He was in Pahalgam with his wife when terrorists opened fire.

His widow bid a heart-wrenching farewell during the solemn military ceremony. Remembering her husband as a man of courage and honour, she said, ‘I hope his soul rest in peace. He lived a good life. He made us proud, and we should keep this pride in every way,’ before breaking down in grief.

A total of 26 people were killed in the April 22 attack by terrorists on tourists in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.
